Wages for IT Pros Decline in Q3
The Yoh Index of Technology Wages dropped 6.21 percent from the same time last year.
"It appears that the demand for technology workers continues to ebb," says Bill Yoh, President and CEO of Yoh. "We believe we'll continue to see softening in certain sectors as the state of the economy leads companies to tighten budgets and delay projects."

NAACB Report Shows IT Employment at All Time High in June
As reported by Courtney Carpenter on TechCareers.com, the National Association of Computer Consultant Businesses (NACCB) monthly IT Employment Index report for June showed IT employment reaching an all-time high of 3,907,800. Additionally, IT has grown by almost 90,000 jobs compared to the overall employment market that has lost 438,000 jobs.
"In light of deteriorating conditions in the general employment market, I am heartened by the continued resilience of IT employment," commented Mark Roberts, CEO of NACCB.

Yoh Index of Tech Wages Steady in 2nd Quarter
(Click here to visit the Yoh Index page directly)
Vice President of Strategy and Marketing for Yoh, Jim Lanzalotto says "This data shows wages have started to level out a bit. Although wages were down in the first quarter, they've held steady in the second. We've also experienced a slight increase at the end of the second quarter which we'll be monitoring to see if it is the start of wages trending upwards again through the second half of the year. While we may not be seeing robust growth, we're also not experiencing the black hole others have predicted."

Foreign-born U.S. IT Grads - Green Card Fixes Coming?
An excellent article on ComputerWorld by By Patrick Thibodeau lays it all out...
Although the H1B Visa issues creep along without resolution, 3 new bills have been introduced in the House that aim to help ease the difficulty foreign nationals working in the U.S. experience when trying to obtain permanent residency.
Fixing the permanent residency, or green card employment-based, visa program has been a top legislative goal of high-tech industry proponents, on par with their efforts to raise the H-1B cap.
HR 6039 will exempt graduates of U.S. universities with advanced degrees in science and tech — the so called STEM degrees (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) — from the annual 140,000 limit on these permanent residency visas.

IT - Making the World a Better Place
Ray Kurzweil, author, inventor, scientist, entrepreneur and "futurist" wrote a compelling article in last weekend's Washington Post entitled "Making the World A Billion Times Better". In it, you will find the core message of his book "The Singularity is Near", and even more reason to be in the field of information technology. Why? Because, as Mr.Kurzweil explains, almost every advancement in technology (medicine, manufacturing, transportation, engineering, etc.) is a direct result of advancements in information technology, and that advancements in IT, by nature, have been, and will continue to grow at an exponential rate.
Think of the implications...

Philadelphia IT Industry to Lead PA's Economic Revival
In today's Philadelphia Inquirer (Mon. Apr. 14, 2008), there is an article entitled "Pa. economic revival lies in its metro assets" that should give some comfort to those folks living in the Philadelphia region, and working in the business of Information Technology. As a result of recent presidential campaign rhetoric, a renewed intense dialogue has bubbled to the surface that seeks to clarify and understand how people in PA feel about job loss, economic malaise and perceived government neglect. Fortunately, new research from Brookings suggests that strength in our local IT industry is expected to help lead the way forward in spite of the difficult times so many people in our region are experiencing.

Huge Opportunity for Students Interested in IT
New statistics released by the Computing Research Association (CRA) reveal a leveling off of the declines we've been seeing in the number of students declaring majors in Computer Science (CS). With the number of students graduating with degrees in CS the smallest this decade, in the face of grand job growth projections in the IT industry, it appears to be an excellent time for students to declare CS as their major. Job prospects could hardly be brighter.
