UNISYS Headquarters Coming to Center City

UNISYS, with it's roots stemming from Univ. of Penn., is replanting headquarters inside Two Liberty Place in Center City Philadelphia. As a result of the move from Blue Bell, 225 management jobs will be relocated to Center City, while about 2,000 more or so UNISYS employees will continue working in the Philadelphia region, but outside of Center City.

"We wanted to change the face of Unisys to our clients and partners, and to people we're recruiting," Unisys chief executive officer Joseph McGrath said in an interview yesterday. After 35 years in a former computer factory, "we need a high-tech space."

As a past employee of the original Burroughs Computer Company dating back to the 1968 I can say that I am shocked at what has happened to this once second largest company ($10B)in the computer field with what was and probably still is one of the most advanced hardware/OS concepts in the world bar-none.

I am proud to have worked for Burroughs and Unisys for a total of 33 years and have enjoyed every minute of it - even the pain.

My last last few years where spent supporting A-Series Main Frames and development of the ES7000 System. I have worked on every system developed at the EASTCOAST facilities and the ES7000 break-away from the mainframes, retiring in 2001.

Those of us that were fortunate enough to stay with the company can say with pride that were part of the greatest EDP company and era. I sincerely hope that UNISYS recovers because it is still a company with fantastic grass roots - come-on Philly teams pull it through.

I don't care what EDP arena you are in you can hold your head high that audience. We were and still can be a top performing company.
