Global Knowledge and Tech Republic just released their 2008 IT Skills and Salary Report. Amongst a wealth of interesting findings, you'll find the three highest paying certifications (average salary $95k+ to 101k+) to be the following:
  1. PMI Project Management Professional (PMP)
  2. PMI Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)
  3. ITIL v2 – Foundations
Other key findings were as follows:
  • This year's average salary for IT professionals was up 3.25% from 2007 findings to $73,963.
  • The average salary for those with a four-year degree is $76,446 compared to $65,712 for a certificate or degree from a technical school.
  • The 3 fastest growing occupations are network systems and data communications analysts, computer systems analysts, and computer software applications engineers.

Huge Opportunity for Students Interested in IT

New statistics released by the Computing Research Association (CRA) reveal a leveling off of the declines we've been seeing in the number of students declaring majors in Computer Science (CS). With the number of students graduating with degrees in CS the smallest this decade, in the face of grand job growth projections in the IT industry, it appears to be an excellent time for students to declare CS as their major. Job prospects could hardly be brighter.

CareerXRoads - Find out how companies are finding new employees

Though not focused on IT hiring, the CareerXRoads report just published provides useful insight that people in IT, whether on the hiring side of the table, or the job hunting side, can use to understand what's happening out there. Here are the key findings:
  • Internal Transfers and Promotions constitute 30.0% of all the positions a company fills.
  • Referrals (employee, alumni, vendor, etc.) make up 28.7% of all external hires and are
    arguably the number one external source.
  • Hires attributed to Job Boards (including the Company site as a job board) represent 25.7% of external hires.

IT Hiring Outlook in Q2 2008 Up Net 13%

According to the newly released "Robert Half Technology IT Hiring Index and Skills Report", 15% of Philadelphia area CIOs are expecting to hire IT professionals in the 2nd Quarter of 2008, versus 2% who are expecting reductions. The net 13 percent increase is down one point from the area's first-quarter 2008 forecast but one point above the national average. Here is a graph showing the results for each of the major metropolitan areas in the report.
